According to Tevenson’s 1997 report, in education Information and Communication Technology or ICT is the study of the technology used to handle information and aid communication. It is a course which people study to know more on how to develop our technology in interacting to each other and finding data or answers from our questions.![]()
ICT can also be simply referred to the technologies that we use in our everyday lives, what we use for communication. ICT consists of computer systems, data communication systems, knowledge systems, office systems, and consumer electronics. Also integral are networked information infrastructures, examples are cellphones, internet, telephones, and etc.
Now let us know how ICT is running in our country. The following information and facts was determined by the PCASTRD (Philippine Council for Advance Science and Technology Research and development):
Telecommunications
- About 4.7 million telephone lines have been installed by various carriers
- About 2.1 million GSM phones including WAP were sold
- Some 32 million text messages are being sent everyday
Internet
- Philippines ranks 39th among Asian countries in the ranking of worldwide Internet economy in terms of competitiveness
- Philippine Internet economy (selling of goods and services through Internet) earned US$ 1.6 million in 1997 and roughly US$ 383.7 million in 2002
- 140 government agencies have web sites
- 375 local government units have web presence
- 15% of small-and-medium scale enterprises (SMEs) have websites
E-Commerce
- R.A. No. 8792 or the “E-Commerce Act” recognizes the use of electronic commercial and non-commercial transactions, penalties for unlawful use, and other purposes
- Government-to-Government (G2G) ongoing initiatives: government e-procurement system (GEPS) (DBM), provincial networks
- Government-to-Business (G2B) ongoing initiatives: e-filing (BIR), I-register (SEC), electronic lodgement, transshipment/transfer systems, and data exchange linkages (BOC)
- Government-to-Citizen (G2C) ongoing initiatives: single government portal, website for all government agencies (NCC), e-filing (BIR), birth certificate (NSO), passport processing (DFA), SSS
We started from 5110, from abacus, from encarta and all but because of ICT all of these stuff was made better. A lot of new units of cellphones come out, calculator was made. Yahoo, Google, internet was born. New discovery, New models, New features and etc. these are the results of development, knowledge and aim on how to make things better and easier.
As we all say, “nothing is perfect” so that means ICT has its own imperfection. ICT has its own negative and positive results.
In old times people use to travel far places with horses, dragons, and broomsticks to see their love one’s, to be with them, or just to express their poems. some sends their hand written letters through birds and all these flying creatures. But because of ICT, things got easier. Now, people will just turn on their computers, face their webcams and WAllah! BaM! theirs your prince and princess. You can talk to them, see them instantly through internet. And With just a dial on your handy dandy phones you can already talk to you love one’s from neverland… Things like this became easier for us. It conserves time, money and effort. These are some of the positive results.
On the other hand, ICT causes us to be more dependent in our technologies today. It simply makes us become more lazy. The messages people sent through cellphones and emails are not that effortful and and not so special like the hand written one’s because people didn’t sweat on writing it. We should always learn how to do simple things on our own. We should not depent on things that are temporary and can be broken anytime, anywhere.
